Grey Nail Polish: 50 Shades of
Fabulous for Your Fingers and Toes
Autumn can be depressing. It’s dark when we wake up, it’s dark when we come home from work, and everyday fashions take on an altogether darker hue, and so when Grey Nail Polish was listed to become the biggest come-back nail colour of autumn/winter 2018-19, I have to admit, I was pretty taken aback.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Grey Nails. They’re stylish, they’re sophisticated, and they coordinate with every colour in the wardrobe, but can we really deal with more grey at the darkest time of year? Well, thanks to OPI, Shellac, and Gelish, yes we can! They’ve released the most sensational nail polishes for us to enjoy this coming season, embracing all 50 shades of grey!
Grey Nails: Where It All Began
We were first introduced to Grey Nail Polish back in Autumn 2012, when leading fashion houses Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander McQueen debuted grey and silver nails along with their winter collections.
Overnight, grey became a new colour frenzy in world of nails, with A-listers, celebrities, and even President’s wife Michelle Obama embracing the grey nail trend. Over the years, grey polish has remained a popular choice for manicures and pedicures, and due to its versatility, I’m a huge fan myself, but it’s been a while since grey nail varnish was under the spotlight, and I for one am thrilled at its return!
Best Grey Nail Polishes for Autumn / Winter 2018
If your summer toned talons have lost their sparkle, now is the perfect time to experiment with grey. From the palest of pastels to steely silver hues, there really is something to suit every taste in the world of grey nail varnish, and whether you prefer Shellac, OPI or a little bit of Gelish, you’re all-but guaranteed to find your shade of grey in their gel polish collections.
Here are a few of our personal favourites for the coming season:
OPI Strong Coal-ition Nail Polish: If you are ready to embrace grey nails with open arms, this stunning charcoal grey from OPI’s Infinite Shine Collection will give you a glamorous and perfectly polished look. It’s dark and mysterious, but not at all gothic, and so it’s the kind of nail polish you can wear every day.
Gelish Clean Slate Nail Polish: When it comes to grey nail polish, Gelish offer a comprehensive collection of steely hues. Clean Slate is a statement colour, but it works well with professional workwear, weekend casual, and party attire, and so it’s the kind of colour that will take you throughout the coming season and do so in style.
Shellac Cityscape Grey Nail Polish: While it tends to look a bit taupe in the bottle, Shellac’s Cityscape is a lovely shade of pale grey once applied to the nails. It’s a carefree colour that will go with every outfit you wear, and so it’s a great starting point for anyone new to grey nail varnish.
OPI Steel Waters Run Deep Nail Polish: A fabulous introduction to the world of grey, OPI’s Steel Waters Run Deep is intense without being overpowering, and it has a gorgeous gel-like glow. This is a sophisticated nail polish for sophisticated ladies, it is the epitome of understated glamour.
Gelish Midnight Caller Nail Polish: Combining dark charcoal grey with just a hint of shimmer, Midnight Caller grey nail polish by Gelish is a personal favourite of mine. It’s glamorous without being OTT, and it looks fabulous with chunky winter knits and autumnal colours.
Shellac Silver Chrome Nail Polish: With its glistening metallic finish and shimmering silver shade, Silver Chrome by Shellac is set to be the grey nail polish of the season. It’s timeless yet modern, feminine yet funky, and it provides gorgeous colour for 14 days.
OPI Go to Grayt Lengths Nail Polish: At the lighter end of the spectrum, Go to Grayt Lengths by OPI is a shimmering silver toned nail polish that works beautifully with all skin tones. It’s perfect for parties, but subtle enough to wear every day, and it is the ideal trans-seasonal shade for autumn and winter fashions.
Gelish Cashmere Kind of Gal Nail Polish: Designed to add a touch of luxury to your nails, Cashmere Kind of Gal is a soft grey nail polish with a very light and minimalistic shimmer. If you are still not convinced about going grey, I can highly recommend this glamorous shade. You won’t be disappointed!
Shellac Asphalt Nail Polish: A bit like marmite, you’re going to love or hate Shellac’s Asphalt Nail Polish. It’s a bold bluish-grey that demands attention, but it provides the perfect backdrop for nail art.
We can’t guarantee that grey nails will attract Christian Grey into your life, but they will certainly leave you feeling 50 Shades of fabulous, so why not speak to your nail technician about a grey nail makeover today and banish those winter blues with a clean slate of grey.
