The History of Unicorn Makeup

While the history of the mythical unicorn is thought to date back to the 4th century BC, when Greek doctor Ctesias recorded tales of a single-horned wild ass, Unicorn Makeup is a lot more recent. In fact, apart from a brief dabble back in the early 1980s, this makeup trend didn’t really evolve until 2016, when the runways of New York, Paris, Milan and London were suddenly transformed into a fantasy of colour with Unicorn hair, Unicorn eye-shadows, Unicorn eye-lashes, and Unicorn nails.

Fast-forward 2 years, and there’s no sign of the Unicorn Makeup Trend slowing down. Almost every high street cosmetics brand, nail polish brand, and haircare brand have embraced this fantasy world of colour by creating vast ranges of products to satisfy our unicorn obsession. And it’s taken the world by storm.

So why is unicorn makeup and nail varnish so popular? Well, there are many different theories out there, but most seem to lead to the fact that the world has become a little too depressing for the modern woman today. We’ve marched for our human rights, we’ve demanded equality in the workplace, and we’ve become more involved in politics, and while we’ve made positive steps forward for womankind, it has left many of us feeling the need to escape into a world of fantasy with all things pretty, sparkling and glam.

Unicorn Makeup: Getting It Right

Unicorn makeup is one of those things that you really have to master if you are to avoid rocking up to your Monday morning meeting looking like My Little Pony. Unless you work in an artistic environment, you might want to keep it to an absolute minimum during office hours, with just a touch of pale pastel unicorn eye-shadow and matching unicorn nails.

When it comes to after-hours, anything goes with Unicorn Makeup, and so you can really go to town with glitter, holographic embellishments, and a veritable rainbow of colour. Bold eyes work exceptionally well here, and by combining pinks, blues and purples with shimmers of white, it is easy to achieve a fabulously feminine on-trend look. Add a few crystals, lashing of Glitter Lips lipstick, and voila – you’re ready to party!

If you need some tips on getting your unicorn makeup right, head on over to your social media channels. Instagram and Pinterest are literally busting with photos and pictorials to help you achieve the perfect unicorn look, and there are endless tutorials on You Tube. If you type ‘how to do unicorn makeup’ into Google, you’ll get over 100 million results in less than 45-seconds, proving that this fantasy makeup trend is more popular than ever before.

Unicorn Hair: Tantalising Tresses

Then there’s Unicorn Hair. Adored by singers, movie stars and celebrities, Unicorn coloured hair has taken Hollywood by storm. The Kardashians are doing it (with Kylie being the biggest fan of multicoloured wigs, braids and extensions), as are Kelly Osborne, Nicole Ritchie, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Kate Hudson and Rihanna, and so you’re in good company if you decide to go down this route – but you might want to get it done in salon.

Unicorn hair requires a lot of bleaching and colouring, and if you don’t get it right, you could end up losing your hair or looking like an explosion in a paint factory, and that’s not the look we’re going for ladies! Pastel purples and pinks suit all skin tones, but you need to include the five main colours of the spectrum, red, yellow, green, blue and violet if you are to nail the unicorn look.

If the thought of dying your hair blue terrifies you, why not try a few unicorn extensions instead? They are easy to clip in, affordable, and they allow you to experiment with colour without damaging your hair. They are perfect for those who want to embrace their inner unicorns at the weekend and return to ‘normal’ when its time to head back to work.

Unicorn Nail Polish: Rainbow Manicures & Pedicures

If you’re feeling a tad nervous about trying unicorn makeup and hair, or like me, you have flashbacks of the disasters you made in the 1980s (when fortunately, social media wasn’t around!) you might want to start your journey into this fantasy world of colour with subtle unicorn nail polish.

All the leading nail care brands such as Shellac, Gelish, OPI and China Glaze offer rainbow coloured nail polishes to complement the unicorn nail trend, and you can go as bold or as subtle as you like. Paint your fingers and toes with pretty pastel hues to add a pop of colour to grey winter days – there’s nothing better, believe me!

A Word About Unicorn Snot….

On your journey to becoming a beautiful unicorn, you may encounter Unicorn Snot®, but worry not, it’s not extracted from the nostrils of unicorns! It’s a gorgeous glitter gel that you can use just about anywhere on the face or body to give yourself a magical glow. It’s a fun place to start if your new to the world of unicorn colour, so grab yourself a pot of snot!

Try as you might, the unicorn trend is impossible to escape, so embrace it my fellow technicoloured goddesses – and I’ll meet you somewhere over the rainbow!
