How to Strengthen Your Nails

How Can I Strengthen My Nails and Help them Grow?

If you want strong, healthy nails that don’t weaken as they grow, follow these tips:

Eat a Healthy Diet and Use Supplements

There are some nutrients that are known to improve nail strength and health including:

Biotin

Biotin is from the B group of vitamins and it’s great for healthy hair, nails, and a healthy nervous system. The body can’t store biotin as it’s water-soluble, so get plenty of it in your diet and take a supplement where necessary. If you look at a lot of hair and nails supplements, you’ll notice that biotin is the main ingredient.

In food, you can find it in oily fish like sardines as well as eggs, beans, peas, and lentils.

Calcium

Calcium is another important nutrient if you want to strengthen your nails. You can find it in milk, cheese, leafy greens, dried fruit, and yoghurt.

Protein

Protein is the ultimate healthy skin, hair, and nails nutrient. Nails are made from a protein called keratin so you need plenty in your diet. Be sure to include eggs, nuts, fish, lean meats, and low fat dairy products. For vegetarians, beans, lentils, and legumes are healthy sources of protein.

Stay Hydrated

Dry nails are brittle nails, so try to drink around 2 litres of water a day to keep them hydrated from the inside out.

Don’t Expose Your Nails to Water Too Often

Exposure to water weakens nails so wear gloves when you are using cleaning products or doing the dishes.

Keep Weaker Nails Short

While you’re trying to strengthen your nails, keep them fairly short. Longer nails are more likely to break and snag.

File Nails in One Direction

Don’t file your nails in a back and forth motion as this can cause them to weaken and split. File nails in one direction and try to keep them all at the same length. For gentle but effective natural nail filing, try The Edge Curved Duraboard Medium Grit 240

Give Your Nails a Break

No matter how much you love gel manis, acrylics, and nail polish, your nails need a break every now and again. Focus on applying targeted treatments to strengthen your nails and keep them hydrated. Which brings us nicely onto our next tip.

Pimp Your Nail Care Routine

Fed up of having brittle nails and bone dry hands? Follow these tips to strengthen your nails and soften your hands:

  • Get in to the habit of using a rich hand cream regularly. Especially if you’ve been using drying hand sanitiser all day.
  • Give your nails a break from nail colour and just wear a fortifying base coat instead. OPI Gel Colour Stay Strong GelColor Base Coat is infused with a calcium and vitamin complex to strengthen and protect bendy, soft, damaged, or peeling nails.
  • Apply a cuticle oil like Silcare Winter Spice Cuticle Oil every night to promote health growth and strengthen your nails.
